An hour before sunrise on a cool October morning, a small group of swimmers (what they call a pod) meets on the beach of the South End Rowing Club in San Francisco’s Aquatic Park... Swimmers in the Bay can feel good about water quality, says Sejal Choksi-Chugh, director of the San Francisco Baykeeper, a nonprofit that works to protect and improve the health of the Bay. Choksi-Chugh says that before the federal Clean Water Act was enacted in 1972 and began to be enforced, there was a higher chance of getting sick.
