Swimmers Traverse the Golden Gate for Baykeeper

Golden Gate Medley SwimOn August 3, eight open-water swimmers from the Dolphin Club swam laps beneath the Golden Gate Bridge to raise awareness of how Bay pollution impacts swimmers and to raise funds for San Francisco Baykeeper. The swimmers completed each lap using butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle strokes, and one swimmer completed more than two miles in handcuffs!

We are excited to announce that the Golden Gate Medley swim generated more than $10,000 for Baykeeper. Thank you to all of the swimmers, pilots and supporters who helped make this event a great success for Baykeeper and the Bay!

Oil Spill Disaster in the Gulf Continues, Despite Sealed Well

Save Our GulfSan Francisco Baykeeper continues to support our sister Gulf Coast Waterkeepers with the response to the ongoing BP oil disaster. While BP has managed to seal the gushing well, the company's unmitigated use of dispersants over the last four months has resulted in millions of gallons of oil contaminating the deep marine environment of the Gulf. Researchers now project that the Gulf dead zones created by the BP oil spill will last for at least two years.

Baykeeper will continue working closely with the Waterkeepers of the Gulf Coast to keep you updated on this ongoing environmental crisis. Please support their efforts by making a gift today at www.saveourgulf.org.

Join Baykeeper for a bike rally in support of healthy waterways. What does bicycling have to do with clean water, you ask? Shimano, a major bicycle and fishing gear manufacturer, is opposing protections for California's coastal waters that will help revitalize the marine ecosystem. Baykeeper is teaming up with local bicycling advocates to insist on the best possible protections for our coastal waters, including right here in San Francisco Bay.

The rally begins at 5:30 pm, followed by a 7:00 pm ride to Triple Crown, located at 1760 Market Street (bike valet parking provided). Come out and join us! RSVP and spread the word through Facebook.

If you shop at this Whole Foods, bring your own bag and donate your nickel to Baykeeper. Using your own shopping bag is always important for cutting down on disposable paper and plastic bags that end up in landfills or the Bay and ocean – now it's good way to help support Baykeeper's work, too!
