Excited for my Upcoming Sabbatical!

Two people waving from the aboard the Baykeeper patrol boat

As many of you know, Baykeeper has become part of my DNA. I first joined the organization as a legal fellow in 2002, and now, more than two decades later, I’m honored to helm this small but incredibly mighty team.

Over the years, I’ve seen it all: from the disturbing (fossil fuel companies dumping petcoke into the Bay), to the inspiring (the upswell of community response after the 2007 Cosco Busan oil spill), to the downright bizarre (remember the “mystery goo” spill of 2015?). Through it all, I’ve had the privilege of standing up for the Bay alongside a team that has achieved hundreds of legal and policy victories—and counting.

So last year, I realized it might be time to take a brief pause to reflect and renew.

Around that same time, several colleagues forwarded me information about the O2 Initiatives sabbatical award for Bay Area nonprofit leaders. The program’s mission is to create “space for dedicated nonprofit leaders to take an essential break for rest, renewal, and reimagining the future of their organizations.” The foundation also generously provides financial and coaching support to assist nonprofits while their executive directors are away.

It felt like a sign from the universe! I was thrilled to apply for an opportunity that promised space for growth, both for me and for the organization.

After a competitive process, I was honored to be selected as a 2026 awardee, and my three-month sabbatical officially begins in June—yay!

This summer, I’ll be fully unplugged from Baykeeper. I’m looking forward to relishing the things I love most, like travel, photography, dance, and quality time with family. And who knows, maybe I’ll even finally learn to play the ukulele!

I have to admit, taking a step back from the mission that has animated nearly every day of my life since the early 2000s is a little daunting. But I know I’ll come back stronger after having the chance to truly relax and recharge. I also know that Baykeeper could not be in better hands. Our staff includes some of California’s top experts in environmental law and policy, backed by a talented operations team that knows this organization inside and out.

I’m also deeply grateful to Baykeeper’s Board of Directors, who have enthusiastically championed this sabbatical and encouraged me to prioritize personal wellness and long-term sustainability in this position.

So, as I sign off for the summer, I’m sending lots of positive, restful wishes your way. And I look forward to reconnecting when I’m back in September!

Warmly,

Sejal Choksi-Chugh
