On the Front line of Algae Bloom Detection
After large algae blooms in 2022 and 2023 led to massive fish die-offs in the Bay, Baykeeper launched the Monitoring and Event Response for Harmful Algal Blooms (MERHAB) program, with support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Through the MERHAB program, our seasoned field scientists train and engage volunteers across the Bay Area to look for signs of algae blooms and take samples, with extra monitoring in the summer months when blooms are more likely to occur.
If you see signs of a harmful bloom—typically dark red or coffee-colored—please stay out of the water, note the location, take photos, and reach out to our pollution hotline so we can investigate.
