California sues Exxon, claiming oil giant deceived public on how much plastic can be recycled

California and environmental groups sued ExxonMobil on Monday over plastic pollution, accusing the petroleum giant of falsely telling the public for decades that plastic waste is recycled before it’s dumped into landfills…

“The petrochemical industry, led by ExxonMobil … caused the single-use plastics pollution crisis through a decades-long campaign asserting that single-use plastics trash is harmless and can be disposed of easily and safely,” San Francisco Baykeeper, the Surfrider Foundation, the Sierra Club and Heal the Bay said in a separate suit in the same court. “But landfilling is not a safe solution because single-use plastics never biodegrade. Instead, they break into microplastics and leach dangerous chemicals into the soil and surrounding groundwater.”
