Rewilding a Toxic Site in Alameda

It all started when two kayakers noticed something strange along Alameda’s shoreline: thousands of glittering pieces of metal poking out of the mud.

They reported their observations to our pollution hotline, leading to a full investigation, a cleanup of more than 12,000 pounds of toxic metal trash, and a plan to return this former industrial site to native plants

Pictured, at top: a small portion of the metal shaving removed from Alameda’s shoreline.

How the Trump Administration Could Harm the Bay

The second Trump administration is entering the White House armed with plans to dismantle democracy and tear down environmental protections.

We challenged their anti-environmental agenda the first time around, and won. We’ve studied their new proposals and the ways they will affect San Francisco Bay. Baykeeper’s scientists and attorneys are ready to fight.

Learn more about how the new administration’s policies threaten the Bay, and how Baykeeper will hold them in check.

The Rainy Season Is for Catching Polluters

Our field team has been busy this rainy season, traveling all over the Bay Area to take runoff samples from industrial facilities—and catching polluters red handed.

This year, our scientists targeted facilities in San Francisco, Santa Clara County, and the East Bay. Once we have the lab results, our legal team will kick into gear to hold these companies responsible for any illegal pollution.

Learn more about how we investigate.

Take Action: Report Pollution Around the Bay

Over the years, Baykeeper has received thousands of pollution tips from people across the Bay Area. These reports help us hold polluters accountable and are especially valuable during the rainy season, when there’s a high volume of polluted runoff.

If you see signs of pollution flowing into the Bay or into local creeks or storm drains please alert our field team!

Pressuring the Feds to Protect the Bay’s White Sturgeon

White Sturgeon have been around for millions of years—but they may not survive in the Bay much longer. That’s why we petitioned California to protect the White Sturgeon under the California Endangered Species Act, and the state is reviewing the population’s status.

We also petitioned the US Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the Bay’s White Sturgeon, but it failed to respond to our request. Last week, we notified the agency that we’re going to sue for failure to issue a draft decision within the mandated timeline.
