Restore the San Joaquin River and Its Salmon

Last fall, hundreds of Baykeeper supporters urged the Bureau of Reclamation to renegotiate unsustainable water contracts that have allowed private interests to drain the San Joaquin River dry, decimating salmon populations. And your voices were heard!

For the first time since 1968, the Bureau has decided to reassess a specific San Joaquin River water contract that sends the river’s flows to a small group of privileged agribusinesses. But the fight isn’t over yet. Once negotiations begin, these wealthy contractors will push hard to keep diverting as much water as possible—even if it means leaving the San Joaquin dry. Baykeeper will advocate to ensure that any water allocation contract protects the river, the Delta, and San Francisco Bay… as well as the communities and creatures who rely on these ecosystems.
