Take Action: No Free Pass for Hazardous Waste
This legislative session, our advocates are fighting a bill that would lock in decades of toxic waste in the Bay.
SB 404 would exempt metal shredders from complying with hazardous waste laws—despite the industry’s longstanding history of pollution. Instead, the bill largely relies on industry self-regulation. Why? Because metal shredding companies are threatening to leave California if legislators don’t give them a free pass.
Tell your State Assembly member that you oppose SB 404—for the health of the Bay and communities across the state.
Pictured, above: Metal shredding facilities house hazardous waste that pollutes the air and water and periodically catches on fire, as in 2023 at the Radius (formerly Schnitzer) facility in Oakland.

Stopping a Carbon Dumping Scheme
Under the guise of reducing carbon emissions, developers are proposing a dangerous carbon waste dumping scheme in the Bay Area.
The project would pump carbon waste from refineries and power plants into the North Bay’s Montezuma wetlands, impacting communities and ecosystems along the way (conceptual map of the route in orange and purple, above).
We’ll be speaking out against this project on September 9 at the Solano Board of Supervisors. You can join us in Fairfield or click here to sign our petition opposing this destructive project!
Join Us to Rally for the Delta on 9/5
State water contractors and private interests are pushing to fast track the Delta Tunnel project. This project represents an unnecessary and costly infrastructure proposal that will undermine environmental health, public rights, and Tribal sovereignty.
On Friday, September 5, join us at the Rally for the Delta in Sacramento. Alongside our partners at Restore the Delta, Defenders of Wildlife, and many others, we’ll continue to fight this campaign and defend the Bay’s vast watershed. Click here to RSVP.
