A Double Win for the Bay

After our investigators discovered that several Radius Recycling facilities were discharging stormwater with levels of pollution higher than is legally allowed, we took action.

Now Radius Recycling, the company formerly known as Schnitzer Steel, has agreed to make substantial changes to control and treat its runoff pollution before it harms the Bay.

And this win is doubly important. To make up for its past pollution, Radius has agreed to pay $400,000 to UC Davis for the conservation of the Bay’s most endangered fish, including Chinook Salmon and Delta Smelt!

Baykeeper attorney Ben Eichenberg, Congressman Jared Huffman, and Baykeeper Board member DIane Livia

While the Trump administration ramps up its attack on the environment, Baykeeper is ramping up our pressure on Congressional officials to protect SF Bay.

In April, Baykeeper science director Jon Rosenfield traveled to D.C. to meet with House and Senate staff from seven different offices to brief them about issues affecting the Bay.

And earlier this month, Board member Diane Livia and attorney Ben Eichenberg met with Congressman Jared Huffman, who has been a strong advocate for the Bay Area in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Take Action to Stop the Delta Tunnel on 5/19

Tunnel outline with callout for Delta Tunnel meeting on 5/19

A proposed $20 billion Delta Tunnel project would harm communities, wildlife, coastal fishing, and Tribes. And on Monday, you have a chance to stop it.

On May 19 at 9am, the Water Board will hold a public hearing. We need as many people as possible to show up to oppose this destructive project.

You can participate on Zoom or in person. If you plan to make comments please register in advance.

Feel free to draw from our materials for guidance about how to express what’s at stake.

This Saturday! Celebrate the Bay with Us

Three cleanup volunteers with buckets and Baykeeper banner

For Earth Month, volunteers in our Clean Bay Challenge showed up for the Bay in a big way!

More than 73 participants removed 169 pounds of trash from Bay shorelines, parks, and neighborhoods. Our deepest appreciation to everyone who participated!

But it’s not too late to protect the Bay from trash. Conduct your cleanup year-round!
