Baykeeper Earns Charity Navigator’s Top 4-Star Rating

Charity Navigator, the nation’s leading evaluator of nonprofit organizations’ financial performance, has awarded San Francisco Baykeeper its top 4-star rating. This rating designates Baykeeper’s financial efficiency, accountability and transparency to be “Exceptional: Exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its cause.”

Charity Navigator examines a wide range of factors when determining an organization’s rating, including fundraising efficiency, revenue growth and percentage spent on program costs. The organization also checks for good governance practices, such as having independent voting board members and financials that are audited by an independent accountant. Lastly, Charity Navigator confirms that a nonprofit publishes key information such as financial records, board and staff lists and a donor privacy policy.

“Baykeeper is proud of our effective use of our supporters’ donations, and we’re thrilled to be recognized with a four-star rating,” says Deb Self, Executive Director. “We pledge to continue to adhere to the highest standards of financial efficiency and responsibility in our work to protect San Francisco Bay from pollution.”

Charity Navigator designed the ratings to “show givers how efficiently we believe a charity will use their support today, how well it has sustained its programs and services over time and their level of commitment to good governance, best practices and openness with information.”
