Baykeeper Update

Ask the Governor to Sign Key Legislation

Please contact Governor Brown today and ask him to sign three important pieces of legislation that will have major impacts on California's environment and public health.

AB 1112 (Jared Huffman-D, San Rafael) would provide funding for oil spill prevention and response in California. The bill will raise the fee 1.5 cents on a barrel of oil and fund protections for the Bay and coastlines statewide.

AB 376 (Paul Fong-D, Mountain View) would ban the sale of shark fins in California to help stem the killing of more than 70 million sharks killed each year for their fins. Sharks are a important part of the ocean and Bay ecosystem.

AB 1319 (Assemblywoman Betsy Butler, D-El Segundo) would ban the use of bisphenol A in baby bottles. Bisphenol A is an estrogen-mimicking chemical that has been linked to reproductive disorders in humans and in fish and other aquatic life.

I am calling to urge Governor Brown to sign three bills that that are very important for California’s environment and public health.

AB 1112 will provide essential funding for California’s existing oil spill prevention and response programs. This small and temporary fee increase is a small price for the oil industry to pay to mitigate the risk of a major oil spill in San Francisco Bay. This bill deserves his signature.

I also want to urge the Governor to sign AB 376, which would ban the sale of shark fins in California. More than 70 million sharks are killed each year for their fins, and California is an important market for them. If we can set the bar higher here, we will go a long way toward protecting the top predators of our ocean and Bay ecosystems.

Finally, I hope the Governor will sign AB 1319, which would finally ban the use of the hormone disrupting chemical BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups. This chemical poses a risk to both children and our aquatic ecosystems. Please ask the Governor to stand up to the chemical lobby and sign this important bill.

Thank you for your time.
