This map indicates the number of sewage spills, total volume, and total volume recovered within a given sanitation district in the San Francisco Bay Region of California's Regional Water Quality Control Boards. These values are for water year 2011, which in California ranges from October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2011. Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) event data was downloaded from the CIWQS Database, which is maintained by the State Water Resources Control Board. Data contained in CIWQS may differ from what is presented here since data is updated daily to the CIWQS system.

Wet weather overflow data was provided by East Bay Municipal District (EBMUD) on a voluntary basis. Overflows trigger the operation of this system during large storms, which rapidly treats large volumes through a sub-standard disinfection process.

Note that the City and County of San Francisco is not required to report data to the state since they maintain a combined sewer system, yet the City does track all combined sewer overflows.
