Baykeeper has a lineup of scientists with Bay expertise and some of the nation’s top environmental attorneys on staff. And now that we’re entering our third decade, Baykeeper has expanded staff to include our first-ever communications director.
Mark Westlund comes to Baykeeper after leading the communications efforts behind some milestones in the environmental movement. He joined Baykeeper in 2020 after being part of teams at the Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network, and San Francisco’s Department of the Environment that helped convince President Obama to say no to the Keystone XL pipeline, Home Depot to stop selling old growth wood, and made the nation’s first ban on plastic shopping bags a reality.
"I have a deep appreciation for both the human and natural history of the Bay Area, and feel that San Francisco Bay is the defining feature that makes this region like no other place on earth,” Mark observed. "It's an honor to join Baykeeper, to give something back to my community, and contribute to the well-being of future generations living around the Bay."
Mark is a California native and longtime Bay Area resident. In his spare time you might find him with binoculars, surveying the local birdlife, or in the kitchen putting up another batch of pickles.
