San Francisco Baykeeper joined a coalition of 136 groups petitioning the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to require America’s dams and reservoirs to report greenhouse gas emissions under the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reporting Program.
Dams and reservoirs can emit significant GHGs, including methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is several times more destructive to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Adding dams and reservoirs to the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program is a critical step to addressing the climate emergency, as well as achieving federal methane emissions reduction goals.
The EPA's GHG Reporting Program requires large producers of GHGs to report emissions and make that data available to the public. Today, 8,000 facilities are required to report their emissions annually, including fuel and industrial gas suppliers and carbon dioxide injection sites, but hydropower is not included.
