2016 Funds for Bay Restoration Generated From Baykeeper Lawsuits

When Baykeeper settles our Clean Water Act lawsuits with polluters, the polluters are required to make mitigation payments to help repair the damage to the ecosystem from their past pollution. These payments are used to provide grants to other nonprofit science, environmental, and community organizations working to protect and restore the San Francisco Bay watershed.

Over our 27-year history, Baykeeper has generated more than $10 million in funding for projects that are creating a healthier San Francisco Bay. During 2015-2016, Baykeeper’s successful legal settlements provided a total of $64,675 for the following projects:

Citizens for a Sustainable Point Molate - $1,800
To support work to permanently protect over 100 acres at Point Molate in Richmond, one of the last undeveloped headlands on the shores of San Francisco Bay.

Earth Team - $14,850
To support Zero Litter, a student-led, hands-on environmental education and outreach program, working with Alameda and Contra Costa County high schools students, teachers, and their communities to protect San Francisco Bay watersheds by reducing litter and pollution from creeks and storm drains.

Friends of Pinole Creek Watershed - $2,025
To support community outreach, volunteer stewardship, and restoration of Pinole Creek’s watershed to promote the survival and recovery of federally-protected steelhead trout.

Peninsula Open Space Trust - $10,000
To support the restoration of 468 acres of tidal marsh at Bair Island, a part of the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge.

San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory - $15,000
To support the restoration of habitat and populations of the endangered western snowy plover in South San Francisco Bay.

Turtle Island Restoration Network - $9,000
To support the Ten Thousand Redwoods Project, which engages of more than 600 volunteers and 3,000 students to grow thousands of native redwood trees to reforest San Francisco Bay watersheds, in Marin, Alameda, and Contra Costa Counties.

The Watershed Project - $12,000
To support an initiative to reduce pollution from litter and other sources, through zero waste school programs and storm water pollution prevention programs.
