Baykeeper's E-Newsletter for June 10, 2008

Key Progress and Exciting Events

Baykeeper’s June e-newsletter brings you the latest on our work to protect the Bay from pollution as well as upcoming Baykeeper events.

Baykeeper Announces Lawsuits Against Sewage

Baykeeper is taking the next step in our Sick of Sewage campaign to make sure Bay Area cities aren’t breaking our clean water laws. Last week we announced new lawsuits against two more major sewage polluters: Hillsborough and Burlingame Hills. These towns are contributing to the sewage overflow problems of the City of Burlingame, which we filed suit against in February. Baykeeper is working to create a comprehensive solution that will prevent sewage spills and overflows on the peninsula.

Protecting the Bay in the State Legislature

We are pleased to announce that the key legislation to improve sewage infrastructure and to reform oil spill response efforts has passed the California State Assembly. Thank you to all the Baykeeper members who contacted your assemblymember to support these important bills.
Baykeeper is sponsoring the California Clean Water Act, authored by Assemblymembers Mark Leno and Jared Huffman, to address sewage spills across the state. The bill requires regulators to annually grade sewer systems and treatment plants for quality of performance in order to keep residents, rate-payers and officials informed of how well their systems are working.
The Assembly also passed six oil spill response bills introduced after the Cosco Busan oil spill in the Bay last November. Baykeeper is the sponsor of one bill, authored by Assemblymember Loni Hancock, which ensures that communities can protect their own coastal areas and that local resources – such as on-the-ground experts, residents trained in emergency response and willing volunteers – will be utilized in future oil spill response efforts.
These bills now move to the State Senate for further consideration. We’ll keep you updated on their progress to the Governor’s desk.
