2013 Funds for Bay Restoration Generated From Baykeeper Lawsuits

When Baykeeper settles our Clean Water Act lawsuits with polluters, the polluters are required to make mitigation payments to help repair the damage to the ecosystem from their past pollution. These payments are used to provide grants to other nonprofit science, environmental, and community organizations working to protect and restore the San Francisco Bay watershed.

Over our 24-year history, Baykeeper has generated millions of dollars in funding for projects that are creating a healthier San Francisco Bay. During 2012-2013, Baykeeper’s successful legal settlements provided a total of $172,800 for the following projects:

Acterra $13,500
To support involvement of youth from underserved Mountain View neighborhoods in habitat restoration and citizen science programs along two San Francisco Bay tributaries, Stevens Creek and Permanente Creek.

Arc Ecology $15,000
To support community environmental technical support and advocacy regarding Treasure Island development and the toxic and radiological contamination of Treasure Island.

California Sportfishing Protection Alliance $15,000
To support community-based policy development, advocacy, and litigation aimed at reducing pollution in the San Francisco Bay watershed and ensuring adequate water flows through the Bay-Delta Estuary.

California Sportfishing Protection Alliance $4,500
To support a technical review of a sewage treatment plant’s permit to discharge wastewater into the San Francisco Bay Delta.

Citizens Committee to Complete the Refuge $7,200
To support the preservation of the western edge of Mowry Slough, one of the most important wetlands on San Francisco Bay’s eastern shoreline.

City Slicker Farms $12,500
To support the prevention of runoff and pesticide pollution in San Francisco Bay by transforming Oakland vacant lots into Bay-friendly organic urban farms that overcome food insecurity.

Communities for a Better Environment $25,000
To support community organizing, research, policy advocacy, and legal interventions to improve the water quality and ecosystems of the Bay and its tributaries by developing a regional air district policy to control the refining of low-quality crude at oil refineries.

EarthTeam $12,600
To support middle and high school student participation in hands-on watershed restoration projects near their schools, including planting of native plants and removal of trash from waterways.

Global Community Monitor $30,000
To support a research, regulatory, and legal strategy to protect San Francisco Bay from toxic runoff from scrap metal facilities.

Mare Island Heritage Trust $10,000
To support long-range planning for Mare Island watershed management and restoration, a rainwater collection system for a native plant garden, and improvement of wildlife habitat.

Save the Bay $20,000
To support an initiative to reduce trash pollution in San Francisco Bay.

Self-Sustaining Communities $7,500
To support a small, underserved, residential-light industrial Richmond neighborhood taking a multi-faceted approach to reduce crime, dumping, flooding, and runoff pollution into San Francisco Bay.
