When Baykeeper settles our Clean Water Act lawsuits with polluters, the polluters are required to make mitigation payments to help repair the damage to the ecosystem from their past pollution. These payments are used to provide grants to other nonprofit science, environmental, and community organizations working to protect and restore the San Francisco Bay watershed.
Over our 30-year history, Baykeeper has generated more than $11 million in funding for projects that are creating a healthier San Francisco Bay. During 2018-2019, Baykeeper’s successful legal settlements provided a total of $275,000 for the following projects:
Earth Team - $15,000
To support recruitment, funding, and training of a team of low-income youth from Hercules High School to restore native habitat, test water quality, and implement a campaign to improve water quality on Refugio Creek, a tributary to San Francisco Bay in West Contra Costa County.
Friends of Peralta Hacienda Historical Park - $15,000
To restore a daylighted section of Peralta Creek that runs through Peralta Hacienda Historical Park in East Oakland, and conduct environmental education in the neighboring community.
Friends of Sausal Creek - $20,000
To continue restoration of Sausal Creek, which has been highly degraded by urban and industrial development, and provide stewardship of the creek's watershed.
Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful - $100,000
To support projects to clean up and restore Coyote Creek, a tributary of San Francisco Bay.
South Bay Clean Creeks Coalition - $100,000
To support organized volunteer cleanups of San Francisco Bay watershed areas.
Urban Tilth - $25,000
To train young people from western Contra Costa County to restore local creeks, work in a native plant nursery, build career skills, and become stewards of their watersheds and communities.
