Baykeeper's Sejal Choksi-Chugh Honored as Local Hero

Baykeeper Executive Director Sejal Choksi-Chugh recently won Bay Nature Magazine's 2020 Local Hero Award for conservation action.

The Local Hero awards are given annually. They honor remarkable local leaders who have made significant contributions to the conservation and understanding of, and connection to, the natural heritage of the San Francisco Bay Area.

In announcing the award, Bay Nature Magazine said, "Sejal is a dynamic local leader who is making significant contributions to the health of San Francisco Bay. Under her leadership, Baykeeper has achieved significant victories to hold Bay polluters accountable, investigating and winning over a hundred lawsuits to stop corporate polluters from harming the Bay."

Bay Nature also cited Sejal and Baykeeper's work "at the core of three of the biggest issues in San Francisco Bay conservation this year."

These issues include:

  • the legal challenge to prevent dirty coal exports from Oakland;
  • the fight to stop oil refineries from doubling the number of tar sands tankers that cross the Bay;
  • and the battle against the EPA’s attempt to exempt the Bay from the Clean Water Act and allow companies to sell off the South Bay salt marshes.

Sejal and three other Local Hero Award recipients will be honored at a Local Hero Awards reception and ceremony on March 22, 2020.

Congratulations, Sejal!
