Protecting Fish & Marine Life
The Bay is home to a remarkable array of fish, birds and marine mammals, including harbor seals, sea lions, leopard sharks, Dungeness crab, brown pelicans and snowy plovers. Hundreds of rare and endangered species live in and around the Bay.
Baykeeper's work to defend the Bay's water quality is crucial to protecting the wildlife of the Bay Area.
Ending Fish Kills at Power Plans
Baykeeper is part of a coalition of environmental and fishing groups that is aggressively fighting the continued use of once-through cooling at Bay Area power plans. Nine billion fish and other marine animals are killed every year in California waters by once-through cooling. Read more about Baykeeper's work to end fish kills at Bay Area power plants.
Protecting California's Salmon
Baykeeper is a member of the coalition that is fighting to save California's salmon from extreme water diversions in the Delta. Salmon fishing on the West Coast has been closed for the last two years due to a dramatic drop in the salmon population. Meanwhile, we won an important court victory in 2008 to require a new plan for managing water diversions in the Delta. Read more about Baykeeper's work to protect California's salmon population.
Fighting to Save the Delta Smelt
Baykeeper is also working on a parallel case to save the endangered Delta smelt, an important indicator species that has all but disappeared due to overpumping in the Delta. Read more about Baykeeper's work as part of a coalition fighting to save the Delta smelt from extinction.
