California environmental leaders learned Wednesday that one of their own, Nancy Sutley, could be tapped to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Sutley currently serves as the deputy mayor for energy and environment in Los Angeles and previously served on the California State Water Resources Control Board, which is responsible for managing California’s water quality. Sutley is also currently on the Board of Directors for San Francisco Baykeeper, a local organization that is part of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a national coalition of water quality advocates headed by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Nancy Sutley’s experience in California, a lead state on environmental issues like climate change, makes her an ideal choice for the post. Her impressive resume demonstrates a breadth of environmental policy experience that spans local, state, and federal government. She served as an energy adviser to former California Governor Gray Davis, managing state and federal regulatory and financial matters, among other duties, and was deputy secretary for policy and intergovernmental relations at the California Environmental Protection Agency. During the Clinton administration, Sutley was senior policy advisor to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's regional administrator in San Francisco and a special assistant at EPA headquarters in Washington.
Water quality groups across California support Sutley’s appointment to an environmental position in the new administration. Several California members of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a coalition of clean water non‐profit organizations, cheered her nomination. San Diego Coastkeeper, San Luis Obispo Coastkeeper, Orange County Coastkeeper, and San Francisco’s own Baykeeper have all registered strong support for the nomination.
