On June 11, 2013, at the age of 62, Gary Emich became the first person to compete 1,000 swims from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco's Aquatic Park without wetsuit or fins. . . . For the past four years Emich has organized fund-raising swim events for Baykeeper, a non-profit organization that protects San Francisco Bay from pollution.
