2014 Funds for Bay Restoration Generated From Baykeeper Lawsuits

When Baykeeper settles our Clean Water Act lawsuits with polluters, the polluters are required to make mitigation payments to help repair the damage to the ecosystem from their past pollution. These payments are used to provide grants to other nonprofit science, environmental, and community organizations working to protect and restore the San Francisco Bay watershed.

Over our 25-year history, Baykeeper has generated over $10 million in funding for projects that are creating a healthier San Francisco Bay. During 2013-2014, Baykeeper’s successful legal settlements provided a total of $157,750 for the following projects:

Acterra: Action for a Healthy Planet $10,000
To support habitat restoration in the watersheds of seven creeks in southern San Mateo and northern Santa Clara counties.

California Sportfishing Protection Alliance $45,000
To support a professional and technical review of the Bay-Delta Water Quality Control Plan, the Delta Stewardship Council’s Delta Plan, and the Bay Delta Conservation Plan, plus outreach to raise public awareness of the water quality issues at stake.

Communities for a Better Environment $20,000
To support community organizing, research, and legal intervention in the reviewing process for proposed expansions of the Phillips 66 refinery in Rodeo and the Chevron refinery in Richmond, including efforts to track and map toxic refinery emissions fallout into San Francisco Bay.

EarthTeam $10,000
To support a successful weekly after-school internship program, based in Pinole Valley High School, that trains students in hands-on scientific riparian habitat monitoring and restoration techniques while actively improving Pinole Creek habitat.

Friends of Sausal Creek $9,000
To support locally-based volunteer programs that involve adults, high school students, and children in restoration, environmental education, and monitoring in the watershed of Oakland’s Sausal Creek.

Global Community Monitor $22,500
To support community-based engagement to strengthen regulatory policies on industrial facilities to reduce storm water pollution containing dust and heavy metals in the San Francisco Bay watershed.

Guadalupe Coyote Resource $10,000
To support engineering studies of alternatives to modify a concrete diversion channel between Stevens Creek and Permanente Creek to allow steelhead and other anadromous fish to migrate from San Francisco Bay to the upper reaches of Permanente Creek.

New Voices Are Rising $10,000
To support community education about reducing water consumption, conserving water, and reducing storm water pollution, presented by trained low-income East Bay high school students.

Santa Clara County Creeks Coalition $8,237.50
To support a volunteer cleanup of trash from a four-mile section of Coyote Creek in San Jose, in order to restore the creek’s water quality and ecological and recreational values.

Save the Bay $10,000
To support the engaging and mobilizing local residents to implement ordinances that reduce litter from plastic bags, Styrofoam and tobacco; secure policies that reduce tobacco litter at the source; and expand awareness among diverse Bay Area audiences about the threat of tobacco waste in waterways.

SPAWNERS $2,925
To support enhancement and protection of the health of the San Pablo Creek watershed by engaging students in volunteer-led water quality monitoring, creek restoration, re-vegetation, native plant demonstration gardens, and service learning.

Watershed Alliance of Marin $87.50
To support outreach, education, environmental conservation, species recovery, and habitat restoration in the Marin County portion of the San Francisco Bay watershed.
