Cleanup of oil spill continues

beach_cleanupAlameda's beaches appear to have taken the biggest hit from the 400 to 800 gallons of bunker fuel that spilled into the Bay last Friday.

"We did see the oil spread to as much as a four mile long slick," said San Francisco Baykeeper Executive Director Deb Self.

Self says the government response to this spill is better than it was two years ago when the Cosco Busan spilled more than 50,000 gallons into the bay.

The official death count on birds is 38. San Francisco Baykeeper's scientists say it's actually closer to 60. Fishing has been suspended in the waters from the Bay Bridge south to the San Mateo Bridge. And it'll be quite some time before the full environmental impact of the spill is known.
