Don't Let Your Holiday Festivities Pollute the Bay

Baykeeper is reminding Bay Area residents that you can help protect San Francisco Bay from sewage spills this winter. How? By making some simple changes to your holiday traditions. When you gather together with family and friends for special holiday meals, all that extra cooking and cleaning can put a big burden on sewer systems. It’s important not to let oil and grease from pots, pans and dishes get washed down the drain, where it can clog sewer lines. When sewer lines get clogged, it can cause sewage backups into your home or sewage spills into creeks and the Bay. The Bay's ecosystem and our local birds, fish, seals and sea lions need clean water to survive, so this winter be sure to do your part to help keep the Bay clean. The Oil Spill in the Bay, One Year Later

Earlier this month, Baykeeper marked the anniversary of last year's Cosco Busan oil spill in the Bay. Baykeeper continues to work to protect the Bay from future oil spills by reforming policies that govern preparation and response. To learn more about our top priorities for preventing harm to the Bay's wildlife and shorelines, you can order a free copy of Baykeeper's anniversary publication on oil spill policy reform.

You can also read Baykeeper's op-ed on preventing oil spills, co-written with Pacific Environment, in the San Francisco Chronicle, or Baykeeper's op-ed on the need for improved cleanup technology, co-written with State Senator-elect Mark Leno, in the Marin Independent Journal. Check out local ABC news coverage of our panel discussion on policy reforms, held at the Commonwealth Club on November 7. You can also hear more about the ecological impacts of the spill in this KQED Quest radio news report.
