Turning ghost ships green: Bay’s rusting warriors are cleaned up

San Francisco Chronicle

The mothballed miliary ships of the Ghost Fleet of Suisun Bay became a floating toxic waste dump, until Baykeeper and other environmental groups successfully sued to require the US government to stop the contamination of Suisun Bay and San Francisco Bay. Only 3 of the original 57 polluting ships are left, and pollution controls are in place on ships used for spare parts that have since been stored in Suisun Bay. "We're really pleased with the progress," said Sejal Choksi-Chugh, Baykeeper Executive Director.
