Discounts on Rain Barrels in San Francisco

Oct 24, 2011

Want to help cut pollution in the Bay by collecting and reusing rainwater from your San Francisco rooftop? If so, you can get a discount of up to 60% on rain barrels from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). The SFPUC also offers cisterns at discounts of up to $640.

During rainy winter weather, surges of storm water carry trash, oil, pesticides and fertilizers off roofs, yards, streets and parking lots. The pollution flows into storm drains and then into San Francisco Bay. Collecting rain water from your house and yard for later landscape irrigation helps protect the Bay, and, in addition, eases pressure on San Francisco’s water supply.

Now in its fourth year, the SFPUC’s popular Discounted Rain Barrel and Cistern Program is open to San Francisco residents, businesses and schools. Supplies are limited. Permits are required to install a cistern and for some rain barrels systems.
